St. Gallen-Altenrhein: a compact FBO airport with no slots
St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (ACH / LSZR) is located directly on Lake Constance, close to the Austrian border and within easy reach of Liechtenstein. The airport operates Business & General Aviation itself as FBO and ramp handler. This creates short passenger routes and one point of contact for aircraft handling, passengers, crew, fuel, de-icing and catering. The airport also explicitly states that business aviation is not subject to capacity restrictions or slots.
Runway 10/28 is 1,455 metres long and 30 metres wide, grooved and lighted. Runway 10 has an ILS/DME Category I approach. In its own handling information the airport lists a broad range of aircraft it can support, from Citations and Learjets to Falcons, Challengers and larger types. That does not mean every aircraft fits at every weight; the specific aircraft performance calculation remains decisive.
Border handling is practical for passengers arriving from the Netherlands. Altenrhein supports immigration for both Schengen and non-Schengen traffic and states that customs can be arranged. The compact regional operation can therefore provide much of the functionality of a larger airport without the same terminal journey.
Operating hours matter more than slots
Altenrhein is not a 24-hour airport. For IFR flights, published hours are 06:30–12:00 and 13:30–21:00 local time Monday to Friday, 07:30–12:00 and 13:30–20:00 on Saturday, and 10:00–12:00 and 13:30–20:00 on Sunday. Extensions are available on request. The midday closure is therefore not a footnote: an arrival or departure around lunchtime must be deliberately fitted into the operating window.
On a short sector from the Netherlands, this can matter more than the flight time itself. A Light Jet or fast turboprop covers Amsterdam–Altenrhein in an indicative block time of around 1 hour 20 minutes. If the preferred schedule runs directly into the closure, leaving slightly earlier can create much more certainty than trying to save a few minutes in the air.
Zurich is the natural major-airport alternative, with broader infrastructure and greater flexibility for larger aircraft. Friedrichshafen sits on the German side of Lake Constance. For the right destination area, however, Altenrhein can be considerably more efficient: the airport has quick access to the A1/A13 network and specifically positions itself for St. Gallen, Bregenz, Vaduz and the surrounding economic region.
From St. Gallen to Vaduz and Bregenz: choose by destination area
Altenrhein also serves a much wider catchment area. The airport quotes about 34 minutes to Vaduz, 33 minutes to Bregenz and 34 minutes to Dornbirn. Lech/Zürs and Davos can also make sense depending on season and road conditions.
St. Gallen combines university, textile and technology business with a compact historic centre. The Abbey District is worth an extra evening, while Einstein Gourmet inside Einstein St. Gallen holds two Michelin stars.

How we turn Altenrhein into a fast door-to-door journey
For a charter request, we first check whether the proposed Light Jet, turboprop or larger business jet fits LSZR comfortably under the current performance conditions. We then match the requested schedule to the IFR opening hours, any required extension, handling, customs and parking. Because the airport itself acts as FBO and handler, that coordination can remain compact.
For one or a few passengers, a Light Jet is often the natural first comparison. A turboprop can be attractive when baggage, cost or runway margin carries more weight. With more passengers or a requirement for a larger cabin, we compare the actual jet type with Zurich or Friedrichshafen so that a shorter road transfer does not come at the expense of operational margin or comfort.
The result should feel simple to the traveller: depart from the Dutch airport that best fits the trip, fly privately to Altenrhein and meet a chauffeur ready for St. Gallen, Vaduz, Bregenz or another destination area. Share your schedule and travel purpose with JetServiceNL and we will compare aircraft, airport and transfer as one complete journey.
