Teterboro is usually the first choice for Manhattan
For most private flights to New York we start with Teterboro Airport (TEB / KTEB), just across the Hudson in New Jersey. The airport is focused almost entirely on private and business aviation and has no scheduled airline service. Passengers use smaller private aviation facilities rather than a large terminal, making the arrival much more direct: leave the aircraft, complete the formalities and continue by car.
Teterboro has two runways, with the longest measuring 7,000 ft. That is suitable for a broad range of business jets, but the airport does not permit aircraft operating above 100,000 lb. With the largest Ultra Long Range aircraft, we therefore check the actual operating weight before recommending Teterboro. If the aircraft does not fit the airport limits, Newark or JFK can be the better operational solution even though the passenger experience is less intimate.
International private flights can clear at Teterboro when the required US customs and immigration arrangements have been made correctly in advance. The airport also has a voluntary restraint on non-essential operations between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am local time. For a late flight from Europe, we therefore consider the preferred landing time and the most suitable airport together rather than simply adding the flight time to the departure time.
Westchester County Airport (HPN) becomes useful when Manhattan is not the real destination. For Greenwich, Westchester County and parts of Connecticut, HPN can remove a considerable amount of driving. This is why we ask for the actual hotel, office or residential address when preparing a New York quotation. The airport that looks closest to the city name is not always the one that delivers the shortest journey.
Eight hours across the Atlantic: comfort matters as much as range
Amsterdam to New York is a proper transatlantic sector. We normally compare Heavy and Ultra Long Range Jets first. That does not mean a smaller aircraft is automatically unsuitable. Modern Super Midsize Jets can fly to the New York area non-stop in favourable circumstances, but for a charter we want sensible margin for headwinds, passengers, baggage and the fuel reserves required for the actual flight.
Cabin quality matters far more on an eight-hour flight than it does on a short European sector. Comfortable seats, a quiet cabin, room to work or sleep and a practical galley all help preserve the travel day after landing. Six passengers travelling directly to meetings in Manhattan may be better served by a comfortable Heavy Jet than by an aircraft that can only just make the sector. A family trip can put more emphasis on baggage volume and the extra luggage that often appears on the return.
The westbound flight from Europe is generally the longer sector. The return to the Netherlands often benefits from the prevailing winds, but that does not automatically mean changing aircraft. For a one- or two-night stay, keeping the same aircraft in the New York area can be efficient. For a longer visit, allowing that aircraft to continue with other work and sourcing a fresh option for the return may reduce the amount of empty flying. We compare both structures when preparing the quotation.
If the destination area is already known, you may share it later or include it voluntarily for more tailored airport and transfer advice.
Teterboro is geographically close to Midtown, but Hudson crossings and Manhattan traffic decide how much time is actually saved. For a hotel on Fifth Avenue or a Midtown meeting, Teterboro is usually effective. A direct journey to Downtown, Brooklyn or Long Island creates a different ground plan. For an important appointment, we prefer to build in realistic driving time rather than base the schedule on the best possible traffic scenario.
For a short business stay, Midtown and the Upper East Side work well because hotels, offices, dining and meeting venues can be kept relatively close together. Aman New York, at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, is a strong choice when a central address and a quiet hotel are priorities. The Mark suits programmes focused around Madison Avenue and the Upper East Side. If most meetings are in SoHo, Tribeca or the Financial District, staying Downtown can save far more time than choosing a famous Midtown hotel.
Dining works best when it follows the same logic. Le Bernardin is in Midtown and combines easily with an agenda around Fifth Avenue or Rockefeller Center. A traveller spending the day Downtown may prefer to dine there rather than cross Manhattan twice at peak traffic times. Keeping a chauffeur available for the evening is often easier than arranging separate cars when meetings overrun.
Plan the return before leaving for New York
Private aviation makes New York flexible, but the strongest itinerary is usually one where the return has been considered before the outbound flight departs. For a one-night trip, we look at whether the same crew can remain, whether a crew change is required and whether the aircraft can stay locally. For three or four nights, a different structure may make more sense. This avoids turning an attractive outbound quote into an expensive empty flight later in the trip.
Normal US border requirements still apply to private jet passengers. The operating carrier submits the required passenger information and coordinates the international arrival with the relevant US authorities. The private aviation advantage is not that immigration or customs disappear; it is the direct routing, control over departure time and the smaller-scale arrival process compared with a commercial airline terminal.
New York is a year-round destination, but demand rises around major finance, fashion, sport and art weeks, as well as during the December holiday period. Earlier planning gives more choice of aircraft and times. Any charter price should remain consistent with the Heavy or Ultra Long Range category used in the travel advice, with the final figure shaped by actual aircraft availability and the most efficient structure for the return.
