Opa-locka Executive is the most convenient arrival for many private flights
For a private jet to Miami, Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport (OPF / KOPF) is usually our first choice. The airport lies north of central Miami and is focused on private and business aviation, with several FBOs handling private aircraft. You avoid the normal passenger flow of Miami International and use a smaller private aviation facility instead. After the border formalities, luggage can go straight to the car.
OPF has an 8,002 ft main runway and can accommodate a broad range of business jets. It also has US customs facilities for international general aviation. The published regular Customs and Border Protection hours are 9:00 am to midnight daily, with arrival procedures that require advance coordination. For a flight from Europe, the operating carrier and local handler confirm the arrangements before we regard the schedule as final.
Miami International Airport (MIA) remains an important alternative. MIA has a General Aviation Center, private aircraft handling and customs facilities for international flights, with its general aviation infrastructure available around the clock. That can be useful for a very late or early arrival, for an aircraft that is better suited to MIA, or when the itinerary is centred on Brickell, Coral Gables or a connection through the main airport.
Choosing between OPF and MIA is therefore not a fixed rule. Miami-Dade Aviation Department lists approximately 30 minutes from OPF to Miami Beach and around 35 minutes to Downtown, although South Florida traffic can easily change those numbers. OPF is particularly convenient for Surfside and Bal Harbour. For Brickell, MIA can sometimes produce the shorter car journey. The actual hotel or residence should therefore be part of the flight plan from the beginning.
Ten hours to Florida: allow for range, rest and real baggage
Amsterdam to Miami covers just over 4,000 nautical miles and the westbound sector is usually a long flying day. We primarily compare Heavy and Ultra Long Range Jets for this route. The aircraft needs more than a brochure range figure: it should carry the actual passengers and baggage with comfortable reserves for the weather and routing on the day. A fuel stop is technically possible with smaller aircraft, but it removes one of the main advantages of flying privately on a long sector.
At around ten hours, the cabin becomes an important part of the travel plan. Proper sleeping options, a quiet place to work, a useful galley and room to move all matter. Business travellers heading straight to Brickell may want to arrive ready for an afternoon of meetings. Families often place more value on a flexible seating layout and generous baggage space. Miami is also one of those destinations where the return journey can involve more luggage than the outbound.
Where the aircraft starts before your trip has a major influence on charter cost. A suitable jet already positioned in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels or Düsseldorf can be more attractive than a lower hourly-rate aircraft that first needs an empty flight from Southern Europe. For a week in Florida, keeping the same aircraft waiting is often unnecessary. We treat the outbound and return as one booking while looking for the structure that avoids unnecessary empty flying in either direction.
Miami Beach, Surfside or Brickell: decide where you actually want to stay
Miami is not a compact city built around a single centre. South Beach offers the familiar Art Deco streets, restaurants and beach life, while Surfside and Bal Harbour are quieter and more residential. Brickell is the high-rise business district on Biscayne Bay. Wynwood and the Design District sit between these areas and attract visitors for art, shopping and dining. Hotel choice therefore has a direct impact on how much of each day is spent in the car.
For a quiet luxury beach stay, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside is a strong base. The hotel itself lists Opa-locka at about 12 miles away, which illustrates why OPF works so well for this part of Miami. A traveller with meetings concentrated in Brickell may be better staying there and accepting that another airport can occasionally make more sense. On Miami Beach, Faena and The Setai remain established luxury choices directly on the ocean.
Miami also has a dining scene where reservations at popular restaurants are worth planning in advance. The Design District includes L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and COTE Miami. On a short visit, dinner is best kept in the same part of town as the afternoon programme; otherwise traffic can dominate the evening.
From a Miami weekend to an onward trip into South Florida
Many private jet journeys do not actually end in Miami. The itinerary may continue to a home elsewhere in South Florida, a marina or the Florida Keys. A car can make sense for Key Largo, while Key West may justify a separate flight. If we know the real destination in advance, we can judge whether OPF, MIA or another South Florida airport offers the strongest connection for the complete journey.
Season matters as well. Winter is popular because of the warm climate and brings additional private aviation demand from North America and Europe. Art Basel Miami Beach, major sporting events and holiday periods add further pressure. Summer and early autumn require closer attention to thunderstorms and the Atlantic hurricane season. Weather developments and possible disruption deserve closer monitoring at that time of year.
The return flight to Europe is usually shorter than the westbound sector because of the prevailing winds. Aircraft advice and any price indication should nevertheless stay within the same Heavy or Ultra Long Range category used for the outbound planning.
