Klagenfurt Airport: 2,720-metre runway and General Aviation handling
Klagenfurt Airport (KLU / LOWK) is the natural gateway for Klagenfurt and Lake Wörthersee. Runway 10/28 is 2,720 metres long and 45 metres wide, and the airport publishes six General Aviation parking positions.
Business and private flights are supported through the airport’s General Aviation Center. Services include assistance with passport and customs clearance, baggage, fuel, catering and ground transport. Security access to the apron is handled through Gate 1. For an international charter, the operating carrier arranges the required handling and formalities in advance so passengers can move from aircraft to car with as few unnecessary steps as possible.
Published operating hours vary by day. Monday to Friday the airport lists 05:45–23:30 local time, Saturday 05:45–22:00 and Sunday 07:00–23:30. Extensions are possible on request, but the airport’s General Aviation information sheet asks for at least 24 hours’ notice to Airport Operations. That matters in particular for a late Saturday return.
Which aircraft works for Amsterdam – Klagenfurt?
The direct distance from Amsterdam is about 500 nautical miles. For two to six passengers, a Light Jet normally offers an efficient balance of speed, comfort and cost. If the trip involves more luggage, golf or ski equipment, or a preference for a larger cabin, a Super Light Jet can be the better fit. Klagenfurt’s long runway also provides more choice than many smaller Alpine airports.
A same-day return can work well for a short business visit. In that case we look beyond airborne time and consider crew duty, the planned ground stop and the operating hours for the return sector. For a stay of several days we compare keeping the aircraft at Klagenfurt with a drop-and-go and a fresh positioning flight for the return.
Baggage deserves specific attention when a Wörthersee stay includes golf, watersports or a longer holiday. An aircraft can have enough seats but still offer the wrong baggage volume. We therefore ask not only how many passengers are travelling, but also how many suitcases and any outsize items need to be carried.
From Klagenfurt Airport to the city and Lake Wörthersee
KLU’s strongest practical advantage is the short ground transfer. Klagenfurt itself is immediately adjacent to the airport. For Lake Wörthersee, the regional tourism organisation quotes roughly 15 to 30 minutes from Klagenfurt Airport. Velden is around 20 kilometres from Klagenfurt, making KLU a much more natural gateway than Ljubljana, Graz or Salzburg when the destination area is around the lake.
The exact destination determines the best plan after landing. A business meeting may keep the chauffeur in Klagenfurt, while a weekend by the lake often continues to Pörtschach, Velden or a private waterfront villa. The strongest luxury accommodation is also concentrated around the lake, including the five-star Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden and five-star-superior Hotel Schloss Seefels. Hotel and chauffeur do not have to be bundled into the charter price, but the address still influences airport choice and arrival timing.
Operating hours, seasonality and charter price
Klagenfurt has a pronounced seasonal rhythm. Summer weekends around Lake Wörthersee, major events and holiday periods can increase demand for aircraft, hotels and chauffeurs. In winter, weather, de-icing and onward road conditions towards ski areas become more relevant. We therefore avoid treating the destination as one identical operation throughout the year.
The published operating window is generous but not H24. A late return may fall inside normal hours on one day and require an extension on another. We only build an extension into the confirmed itinerary once the airport has accepted it. NOTAMs, weather, crew duty and current handling conditions remain part of the final operational check.
The charter price is driven by the available aircraft, positioning to the departure airport, flight time, airport and handling charges, waiting time and the return strategy. On a relatively short sector, an aircraft already positioned near the Netherlands can be materially better value than a cheaper-looking type that first has to fly empty to collect the passengers.
