Arriving privately at Bournemouth Airport
Bournemouth Airport (BOH / EGHH) is the logical airport for most trips to Bournemouth and the surrounding coast. The runway is 2,272 metres long and the airport states that it can accommodate aircraft up to Boeing 767 size. For the Light Jets, Super Light Jets and midsize business aircraft normally used on a short European flight, that provides a comfortable operating environment. Aircraft choice is therefore usually driven by passenger numbers, luggage, cabin preference and availability rather than an unusually restrictive runway.
Private flights are handled through XLR Bournemouth on the north side of the airport. The dedicated Executive Jet Centre has its own passenger lounge, crew facilities and secure private parking. XLR publishes normal operating hours of 07:00 to 19:00, with access to the facilities outside those hours available on request. For an early or late charter, we therefore confirm what will actually be available rather than assuming that every service is automatically staffed throughout the night.
Bournemouth Airport has customs and immigration facilities for international passengers. The required flight and passenger information is submitted in advance by the operator. After the arrival formalities, there is no need to pass through the normal airline terminal. The chauffeur can connect directly with the private handling facility.
From Bournemouth Airport to Sandbanks, Poole or the New Forest
The airport is around 11 kilometres from central Bournemouth. Hotels on West Cliff, the convention centre and the seafront can therefore be reached quickly, although summer traffic can extend the drive. THE NICI on West Cliff is a contemporary upscale option for travellers who want to stay in Bournemouth itself. Those visiting for the sea, a second home or a yacht often continue towards Poole and Sandbanks.
Sandbanks sits at the entrance to Poole Harbour and feels very different from central Bournemouth. Its beach, marina setting and waterfront homes make it a natural base for a private weekend or family stay. Rick Stein Sandbanks overlooks Poole Harbour and works well for seafood and a long lunch by the water. Roads towards Sandbanks can become busy in July and August, so a tightly timed return flight needs a more generous chauffeur schedule than the distance alone might suggest.
Christchurch and the western side of the New Forest lie to the east. XLR lists the New Forest at around 15 minutes from the airport. Chewton Glen, near New Milton on the edge of the national park, is well suited to travellers who prefer a country-house setting to a seafront hotel. Harbour Hotel Christchurch offers a different waterside base directly on Christchurch Harbour. The actual address determines how much time to allow after landing.
Light Jet, Super Light Jet or another category?
The flight from Amsterdam to Bournemouth takes around one hour and ten minutes. A Light Jet is normally the first choice for two to four passengers. With five to eight travellers, several large suitcases or a preference for more cabin space, a Super Light Jet can be more comfortable. Bournemouth's relatively long runway gives us considerable freedom, so the decision can focus on the cabin and total charter price rather than forcing the trip into a particular category.
A turboprop can also make sense when price matters more than a few extra minutes in the air. On a short sector, the difference in total journey time can be modest. Conversely, a larger cabin can be useful on a family weekend in Dorset when the group is carrying pushchairs, beach equipment, golf clubs or other bulky items. We therefore ask about luggage rather than relying on the seat count alone.
For a day return to Bournemouth, the same aircraft can often wait and take the passengers home later. On a stay of several days, we compare the economics of the full programme. Sometimes keeping the aircraft at Bournemouth is the best solution; sometimes arranging the return separately is more efficient. Planning Dorset around the coast, season and onward programme
Bournemouth and Dorset work best when the itinerary genuinely makes use of the coast. Bournemouth has seven miles of beach, while Poole Harbour provides access to Brownsea Island, Sandbanks, Studland and the Purbeck coast. Travellers continuing towards Studland should remember the Sandbanks Ferry: the crossing itself is brief, but queues can build in the high season. For an important meeting or flight, we never plan around theoretical driving time alone.
Late spring and summer are the busiest periods. Hotels, restaurants, marina services and chauffeurs are more heavily booked and road traffic increases. Autumn and winter are quieter, and a stay in the New Forest or beside Christchurch Harbour can be particularly appealing. Coastal weather is more changeable then, although Bournemouth has a well-equipped instrument runway. We monitor the forecast and practical alternate options as the flight approaches.
