Flying privately to Athens
Athens is around three hours and twenty minutes from the Netherlands, a distance where private aviation provides clear practical value: direct travel, a cabin matched to the group and a schedule that can connect with a meeting, yacht, island transfer or weekend. Outside summer the mission is usually straightforward. From June through September, ground capacity becomes the main challenge and airport planning can matter as much as sourcing the aircraft itself.
Athens International as the main gateway
For international business aviation our first choice is Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH / LGAV). It has long runways, international border facilities and professional ground handling for private and general aviation. For a normal charter from the Netherlands this is considerably more robust than trying to use a small regional airfield around the capital as a substitute.
The operational challenge is seasonal. For summer 2026 Athens is slot coordinated and business-jet parking is heavily restricted. Current operational guidance describes roughly 90 minutes of free parking, while a longer stay requires PPR and may only be confirmed close to the flight. An aircraft can therefore drop passengers, reposition to another airport and return later for departure. The passenger journey may barely change, but the aircraft plan can affect both charter cost and scheduling.
Which aircraft suits Amsterdam – Athens?
A super light or midsize jet is normally the strongest first category. The sector is long enough for cabin comfort to be noticeable, and with four to seven travellers extra baggage capacity is useful, particularly when the trip continues to an island, villa or yacht. An efficient super light jet can perform the route comfortably non-stop; a midsize jet adds cabin volume and often more baggage flexibility.
During peak season, the price difference between two comparable jets may be driven mainly by positioning. If an aircraft cannot remain in Athens after arrival, additional empty sectors may be required. A low headline charter price is therefore not necessarily the lowest-cost complete mission. From LGAV to the centre or coast
The airport is east of the city. Transfers to Syntagma, Kolonaki and the historic centre need to allow for urban traffic. If the final destination is the Athens Riviera — Glyfada, Vouliagmeni or a coastal hotel — the road connection from the airport is often more direct and there is no need to cross central Athens. For a yacht departure from Flisvos Marina or a helicopter connection to an island, we can build the ground transfer into the flight plan.
Where to stay in Athens
For classic city luxury, Hotel Grande Bretagne and King George on Syntagma Square remain useful references. For a seaside stay, Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens in Vouliagmeni offers a very different proposition with resort surroundings and straightforward access to the Riviera. Corporate travellers often favour Kolonaki or Syntagma because offices, ministries, restaurants and central sights can be clustered within a relatively compact area.
The dining scene has also developed strongly. The 2026 MICHELIN Guide lists dozens of Athens restaurants, with names such as Delta, Spondi and Soil among the established fine-dining options. On a short stay, dinner in central Athens can easily be paired with the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum or an evening in Kolonaki.
Athens as the gateway to the islands
Unlike many city destinations, Athens is often not the final stop. Travellers continue to Mykonos, Santorini, Paros or a yacht in the Cyclades. During peak summer, the island airports can have even tighter slots and little or no parking. It can therefore be more efficient to use the international jet to Athens and arrange the final leg by helicopter, turboprop or another local transfer rather than forcing the same aircraft through a constrained island airport.
Season and heat
Spring and October are excellent for combining the city with the coast. July and August are hot and are also the busiest months for private aviation across Greece. High temperatures can influence aircraft performance, especially at smaller island airfields. Athens itself has ample runway length, but crew duty, slots, parking and possible repositioning remain important elements of the mission.
Business travel, port or yacht
Athens is an important destination for shipping, finance, energy and regional corporate offices. Meetings in Piraeus can involve a noticeably longer transfer from LGAV than the Riviera, particularly during rush hour. Travellers connecting to a yacht should provide the exact marina in advance: Flisvos, Piraeus and Lavrio sit in different directions. Planning aircraft, chauffeur and any helicopter connection as one journey prevents the time saved in the air from being lost on the ground.
