Sion places Valais within easy reach
For a private flight into Valais, Sion Airport (SIR / LSGS) is an unusually strong gateway. The airport lies in the Rhône valley and presents itself as a convenient access point for Crans-Montana, Verbier, Zermatt and Saas-Fee. Indicative block time from Amsterdam is around one hour and twenty-five minutes. For Verbier and Crans-Montana in particular, the door-to-door journey can therefore be materially shorter than routing through Geneva.
Sion is not a makeshift Alpine strip. It has a paved runway of roughly 2,000 metres, handling facilities and a clear focus on fast, discreet passenger movements. At the same time, it is not an airport where we send an aircraft simply because the runway number looks sufficient. The surrounding terrain means the operator must consider specific procedures and local qualification requirements before accepting the mission.
The greatest benefit appears when the final address is genuinely in Valais. A weekend in Verbier, a stay in Crans-Montana or a chalet farther along the valley can make much more sense through Sion than flying to Geneva first and then adding a long drive. Zermatt still requires a final ground and rail or hotel transfer because the village is car-free, but geographically Sion can remain an attractive starting point.
A good Sion operation starts with crew and weather
At Sion, the question is more sophisticated than “can this aircraft land on 2,000 metres?”. The airport environment is mountainous and specific qualification and familiarisation procedures apply. For commercial charter this is important: the AOC operator must have not only a suitable aircraft but also a crew that is permitted and prepared to operate the airport under the applicable conditions.
For the short route from the Netherlands, a Light or Super Light Jet is often the best first comparison. A light jet is efficient for a small party, while a Super Light Jet can add baggage volume, cabin comfort and useful performance when several suitcases or skis are travelling. That does not make every Super Light Jet suitable in every condition. Temperature, wind, runway condition, payload and operator procedures still decide the final acceptance.
Clear, cold winter weather can provide excellent aircraft performance, while snow, low cloud or strong valley winds can make the operation more restrictive. For that reason, we always consider an alternate early in the planning. Geneva is the obvious robust fallback, while Bern or Chambéry can also be relevant depending on the final resort. The purpose is not merely to build an attractive flight plan, but to avoid a weather change disrupting the entire ground journey.
Verbier, Crans-Montana and the wider Valais
For Verbier, Sion is particularly attractive. The resort combines serious skiing with a lively restaurant scene and a large number of private chalets. W Verbier is a well-known ski-side hotel, while addresses such as Chez Dany and the restaurants around Place Centrale remain popular. For chalet groups, baggage planning matters because skis, snowboards, boots and winter clothing can fill an aircraft hold much faster than the passenger count suggests.
Crans-Montana sits on the north side of the Rhône valley and combines skiing with golf, wellness and high-end hotels. Six Senses Crans-Montana and LeCrans are established options for travellers looking for a full resort experience. Crans-Montana also works outside the ski season, with golf, hiking and events. Sion is therefore not purely a winter airport: in summer the baggage profile simply shifts from skis to golf bags, bicycles and longer leisure stays.
Travellers continuing to Zermatt often choose hotels such as The Omnia, Mont Cervin Palace or Cervo. The ground transfer needs more coordination than Verbier or Crans-Montana because Zermatt is car-free. We therefore prefer to align the aircraft arrival with the chauffeur and onward rail or hotel transfer so that the time gained in the air is not lost during the final stage.
Aircraft position and winter demand shape the charter price
The charter price to Sion is not simply one and a half hours of flying multiplied by an hourly rate. On short European sectors, aircraft position can be equally important. A Light Jet already in the Netherlands or Belgium may be commercially stronger than an aircraft with a lower headline hourly rate that must first position empty from France. Around Christmas, New Year, February and major ski weekends, demand for suitable aircraft and qualified crews can also rise sharply.
Our pricing logic follows the aircraft recommendation. When the Destination Pricing snapshot contains sufficient comparable history, we only show an indication matching a Light or Super Light Jet. The live charter proposal remains based on actual availability, handling, parking where relevant, crew qualification and the current operation at Sion.
For the passenger, the total journey is what matters. A slightly more expensive aircraft into Sion can be better value than a cheaper flight into Geneva once extra chauffeur time, a longer mountain transfer and the uncertainty of busy changeover traffic are included. That is why we compare not only aircraft, but also what the airport itself contributes to the final journey through Valais.
