Van Nuys is the natural private-aviation gateway for many Los Angeles trips
For a private jet to Los Angeles, we normally start with Van Nuys Airport (VNY / KVNY). Located in the San Fernando Valley, it is dedicated largely to private, corporate and other non-scheduled aviation. Several major FBOs handle business aircraft away from the normal airline terminal flow. After landing, the journey can therefore move directly through border formalities, baggage and into the waiting car rather than through a large commercial passenger terminal.
Van Nuys has a main runway of about 8,000 ft and accommodates a broad range of large business jets. For a direct arrival from Europe, however, we still check the exact aircraft, expected landing weight and conditions on the day. An Ultra Long Range Jet that can easily cover the distance is not automatically the best choice at every weight and temperature. Runway margin is assessed for the actual flight rather than assumed from the aircraft category.
A major advantage is that international private flights can clear directly at Van Nuys. The airport has its own U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility for general aviation. The operating carrier must obtain the required permission in advance and coordinate the arrival correctly. For passengers, the practical benefit is straightforward: when Van Nuys suits the mission, there is normally no need to stop at LAX simply to complete U.S. entry formalities.
LAX still has an important role. It may be the stronger option for a hotel in Santa Monica, appointments in the South Bay, or a large aircraft that benefits from the very long runways and generous operating margins of the main international airport. Even with private handling, LAX is a much larger environment and traffic both on and around the airport can add time. We therefore compare the expected journey from touchdown to the destination area rather than looking only at mileage.
More than eleven hours westbound calls for an aircraft with comfortable margin
Amsterdam to Los Angeles is a long westbound transatlantic mission and one of the more demanding non-stop journeys from the Netherlands. We mainly compare Heavy and Ultra Long Range Jets. Several aircraft can cover the distance in favourable conditions, but a charter should not be planned around the edge of a brochure range figure. Headwinds across the Atlantic and North America, passengers, baggage and required fuel reserves all need to fit within a sensible margin.
On a flight lasting more than eleven hours, the cabin becomes part of the travel plan. Proper sleeping positions, a quiet place to work, room to move and good catering matter considerably more than on a short European sector. Travellers going directly from the airport to a studio, meeting or dinner benefit from being able to rest properly on board. Families and entertainment groups may place more emphasis on baggage capacity because Los Angeles trips often involve larger suitcases and several changes of clothing.
The westbound flight is normally longer than the return to Europe, but we do not choose the aircraft for one direction only. On a two-night visit, keeping the same aircraft available may be attractive. For a week in California, using a different aircraft for the return can be more economical. We look at outbound and return as one journey and compare the structure that protects the preferred schedule without paying for unnecessary aircraft time.
In Los Angeles, the destination area determines how much time private aviation really saves
Los Angeles has no single compact centre where nearly all hotels and meetings sit within a few streets. Beverly Hills, Bel Air, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Downtown and Malibu all belong to the same metropolitan area, yet a road journey between them can be surprisingly long at the wrong time of day. That is why we ask for the hotel, residence or first meeting location when quoting. The best airport is the one that shortens the complete journey.
For Beverly Hills, The Maybourne Beverly Hills and The Beverly Hills Hotel are natural luxury bases when appointments are concentrated around Rodeo Drive and Century City. For a West Hollywood programme, staying there can remove a significant amount of daily driving. Travellers whose plans are concentrated along the coast may be better based in Santa Monica.
Keeping a chauffeur available during the day is usually more useful in Los Angeles than booking isolated transfers. Meetings overrun, traffic patterns change and the best route to dinner can look very different an hour later. A visit to Malibu needs more road-time margin.
Departure time and the return journey deserve the same planning as the arrival
Van Nuys combines mandatory noise rules with a voluntary programme encouraging jet operators to avoid flights between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am local time. That does not make every late arrival or very early departure impossible, but it is a good reason to plan the schedule thoughtfully. Where a night movement is essential, we consider which airport and timing best protect the overall itinerary.
Los Angeles attracts year-round demand from business travel, film and entertainment production, sport, awards periods and major events. During busy weeks, demand can increase not only for aircraft but also for good chauffeurs, hotel rooms and aircraft parking. Booking early mainly improves choice. Outside peak periods, short-notice charter can still work very well, but the best combination of aircraft, airport and positioning is never guaranteed.

Actual availability, where the aircraft starts before your trip and the length of stay then shape the quotation. In that way, the choice between Van Nuys and LAX remains part of one travel plan: not an airport comparison for its own sake, but a way to preserve the time advantage of private aviation after landing.
