Private jet to Key West

Key West combines an excellent island location with a relatively short 5,075-ft runway. A good charter plan therefore balances transatlantic range, aircraft performance, customs and the requested arrival time.

Key West International is close to everything, but runway length sets the margin

Key West International Airport (EYW / KEYW) is almost ideally located for a private flight to the Florida Keys. The airport sits on the south-eastern side of the island, placing Old Town, the marinas and the southern waterfront within a short road transfer. The trade-off for that compact location is the runway: EYW has a single runway of approximately 5,075 ft. That works for many business jets, but on a transatlantic mission the aircraft type, landing weight, temperature and departure fuel requirement all need to fit together.

The airport accommodates commercial jets and large general-aviation aircraft, but a short runway means not every long-range aircraft has the same margin in every condition. For an arrival from Europe, a Heavy Jet with suitable range can be attractive, while a very large Ultra Long Range aircraft is not automatically the best choice. The operating company calculates the flight using actual landing weight, weather and runway condition.

Key West has one major practical advantage: U.S. Customs & Border Protection processes general-aviation arrivals at EYW. A direct international arrival can therefore be possible when CBP, handling and the requested timing are confirmed in advance. This can remove the need for an additional domestic sector after clearing customs elsewhere in Florida.

European range and a 5,075-ft runway have to work together

Amsterdam–Key West, at more than 4,100 nm, is a genuine long-range mission. Heavy Jet is therefore our first comparison category. Aircraft in this class combine transatlantic range with a cabin that is comfortable for a journey of around ten hours. Even then, we look closely at the individual type. An aircraft with strong short-field performance can be more appropriate at Key West than a larger jet requiring more runway or more fuel margin.

The return flight is often the more interesting performance question. A non-stop departure towards Europe requires substantial fuel, increasing take-off weight. With high temperatures, a wet runway or unfavourable winds, a planned fuel stop farther north in the United States can be the more robust solution. The aircraft leaves Key West lighter and begins the long transatlantic sector from an airport with more runway. In practice, that can be more reliable than insisting on non-stop operation at all costs.

We do not automatically exclude a Super Midsize Jet simply because EYW has a short runway. On an itinerary that already includes a technical stop, a Super Midsize can be a perfectly sensible aircraft depending on range, baggage and performance. For the first aircraft and pricing reference on the Amsterdam–Florida Keys route, however, we retain Heavy Jet because it better reflects the typical long-haul mission.

Customs, handling and timing matter more than terminal size

EYW has a dedicated general-aviation environment with FBO services. The airport publishes regular FBO hours of 07:00 to 21:00 local time, with call-out available on request. This does not mean that every handling or customs service is automatically available at any requested hour. For international private flights we separately confirm CBP, FBO, parking and any after-hours handling before fixing the final schedule.

The short transfer to your accommodation is a major benefit. Old Town, Truman Annex and the marinas are close to the airport, while properties on the quieter southern side are also easily reached. For clients continuing by yacht, we plan the car directly to the correct marina rather than defaulting to a downtown hotel transfer.

Baggage deserves attention as well. Florida Keys itineraries often combine normal suitcases with golf bags, dive equipment or yacht luggage. Those items can occupy far more volume than the passenger number suggests. We ask about them in advance because an aircraft with the right baggage hold can be more useful in practice than one extra row of seats.

Old Town, waterfront resorts and season shape the stay

For a classic Key West stay, Casa Marina Key West, Ocean Key Resort & Spa and Sunset Key Cottages are logical upscale options with very different locations. Casa Marina sits on the Atlantic side with its beachfront setting; Ocean Key is by Mallory Square and the harbour; Sunset Key feels substantially more secluded and is reached by boat. The right choice therefore depends on whether you want to be in the middle of Old Town or prefer greater privacy.

For dinner, Latitudes on Sunset Key is a well-known destination where the boat transfer becomes part of the evening. Louie’s Backyard offers a different Key West atmosphere on the south side of the island. Around Duval Street the choice is extensive, but travellers prioritising privacy do not need to spend every evening in the busiest streets; the better resorts and waterfront areas support a much quieter programme.

December through April is the most popular dry-season period, while summer is hotter and more humid. The Atlantic hurricane season broadly runs from June through November and can affect planning without making every journey in those months problematic. Private aviation gives more ability to react to changing weather, but during tropical systems aircraft positioning, parking and crew planning become important. We therefore look at the route and Florida alternates as well as the Key West forecast itself.

The key to a good Key West charter is balance: enough range for the long journey, an aircraft genuinely suited to the 5,075-ft runway and customs at the right time. When those pieces align, the transition from Amsterdam to a hotel, marina or private residence can be remarkably simple.

Frequently asked questions

Practical information for your flight to Key West.

How long is a private flight to Key West?

From Amsterdam, the indicative block time is approx. 10 hr 25 min. Winds, routing, air traffic control, any customs or fuel stop and the selected aircraft can change the actual flight time.

Which aircraft is suitable for Key West?

As a first comparison we recommend Heavy Jet. The final choice depends on passengers, baggage, winds, commercial range, runway performance and current operating conditions.

What are the main operational points to consider?

The 5,075-ft runway makes aircraft-specific performance important. EYW has CBP processing for general-aviation arrivals, but customs and handling must be confirmed for the specific flight and time. A fuel stop can be the more robust solution for the heavier return flight to Europe.
