Nuuk International Airport: the practical airport choice for Greenland
Nuuk International Airport (GOH / BGGH) is the first practical airport for this page. The old country-page assumption that Kangerlussuaq is the fixed international gateway has been overtaken by new infrastructure. Nuuk Airport officially opened on 28 November 2024; its new 2,200-metre runway has made Nuuk the principal modern international gateway. Greenland Airports publishes its own handling and fuel information for 2026. The network is also changing quickly: Qaqortoq opened in April 2026 and Ilulissat International is still in its opening process. Every request therefore requires a current check of airport status, weather margin, fuel and regional connection.
Kangerlussuaq remains a useful airport in the network, but is no longer automatically the commercial gateway to all of Greenland. Depending on the destination we compare Nuuk, Qaqortoq, Kangerlussuaq and, once open, the new Ilulissat infrastructure.

Choosing the right aircraft for Greenland
On the longer sector to Greenland, actual payload-range, cabin comfort and crew planning drive the aircraft decision. With a small party an efficient category can cover surprising distances; with more baggage, headwinds or additional reserves a larger aircraft can become the stronger choice. We therefore compare non-stop options with a technical stop when the latter is operationally or commercially more sensible.
From the Netherlands, Super Midsize or Heavy Jet is the first logical category. We then assess the specific aircraft for passenger load, baggage, winds, runway performance and whether it waits or repositions. This keeps the recommendation mission-led rather than category-led.
Intercontinental trips often involve more baggage: several cases per passenger, garment bags and sometimes sports or business equipment. Payload and hold volume can therefore affect non-stop performance. We include baggage from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought once an aircraft has been selected.
The departure point in the Netherlands or Belgium matters as well. For Greenland, an aircraft already positioned in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Brussels or another nearby European base can avoid substantial empty positioning. From touchdown to meetings, hotel or leisure
For accommodation and meetings, Nuuk, South Greenland, Disko Bay are the logical areas. Travellers often combine Arctic leisure, expeditions, corporate/government visits and combined regional itineraries with fjorden, ijsbergen, Arctische natuur en kleinschalige luxe expedities. Hotel and chauffeur are kept outside the flight price, while their location still informs the airport choice. For an early meeting or late arrival, staying closer to the airport or appointment can also be more comfortable than automatically choosing the best-known city centre.
This page deliberately does not recommend one airport for an entire country. The right field depends on city, region, resort, aircraft type and timing, so we compare several airports for every live request. For Greenland, we therefore consider the complete day: departure from home, FBO, flight, arrival, chauffeur and the time the traveller genuinely needs to be at the final destination.
